Another hand up in agreement here! Recently I took on a free-lance icon re-design job for a small product that is part of a larger corporation. The marketing department seemed shocked I started with hand drawn sketches. I explained to them how it saves time for us to get on the same page and find a direction to go by offering 10 - 12 hand drawn ideas instead of sitting in Illustrator and spending time to develop only 2 or 3, at twice the time. Not to mention that after all that time put into digital work, they may choose to go a completely different direction! Quickly rendering and having 10 - 12 versions to look at helps them decide on the elements they really like and then helps the designer refine the design to give them the look they want - faster!
Thanks for the great article! www.elizabethhayden.net

I really, really agree with this. The perception students have that drawing & sketches aren't important is the same attitude that leads clients to believe that there is a magic "design" button on all of our computers.

Shawn,
You make a great point here, I do not think I have seen a true pencil thumb since I was at AIP. I remember doing both boards for video and interface layouts for websites using printed story board templates, drawing on them, and then turning them in for class.

As touch screen technology is on the rise I have seen some cool 'sketch' apps which allow you to draw minus the paper. I think some of this is due to a type of "I want to see it now" demand mentality and also influenced by not meeting clients in person as a result of almost everything going digital.

Come to think of it, the last time I saw a pencil thumb was actually in your office during a project discussion!
